1. Agency Announcements
1. Audrey Shaw is now with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Adirondacks and can be reached at 798-1010 x301 or ashaw@bbbssadk.org. She is also the Secretary, so if you need announcements to go out on Interagency's Blog, email her a JPEG-format document.
2. Sue Gillingham of High Peaks Hospice announced their Vacation Getaway fundraiser. Contact her for more details at Sgillingham@hphpc.org
3. Nick George of Queensbury Senior Center announced their Booksale and also their Health Fair with Senator Betty Little on September 13th. Contact him for more details at seniorsnick@gmail.com
4. Warren/Washington Association for Mental Health is holding a "Health Matters" presentation at the Wood Theatre on May 9th, 11:30a-2pm with Dr. Michael Fowlin. Contact 747-2284 for more info.
5. Roxanne Westcott of Cornell Cooperative Extension passed around their Eat Smart NY Newsletter for May. Also, "Cooking Matters" will be at various grocery stores for SNAP and WIC consumers. Contact her for more info at rmw@cornell.edu
1. She also announced that they will have a Community Garden at East Field in Glens Falls to teach youth about growing their own vegetables, cooking them, nutrition, and community service. Contact her for more info at rmw@cornell.edu
6. Jackie Dunn with Neighbors NY -providing companion care for the elderly - announced that they are very close to being licensed for medical home care services; to that end, Cindy Freebern, RN has been hired.

7. Genny O'Brien of Regional Foodbank of NENY/SNAP Program announced that she assists people with applying for SNAP and follows the application through all of the steps to final approval. She can be reached at gennyo@regionalfoodbank.net

9. Sharon King & Theresa Olson introduced themselves and are with the Catholic Charities Domestic Violence Project for Warren/Washington Counties, providing support to youth impacted by domestic violence, and offers services & support to both the youth and the non-offending parents. 10. Susan Dornan with NY Connects announced the Long Term Care Council meeting in Indian Lake on July 16th. Anyone can attend and there is no fee. Contact her for more info at dornans@warrencountyny.gov

2. Fundraising opportunity at "It's Your Nickel"-any non-profit can sign up with them so that your supporters can drop off bottles & cans and indicate that the deposits go to YOUR organization. Contact them at 88 Dix Ave in GF or at the Broad Street Shopping Center
13. Allison Reynolds, with Council for Prevention (www.councilforprevention.org), introduced Joe San Antonio as their Challenge Program Coordinator since March. This program is for 13-18 year olds with substance abuse issues. It is a mandatory 4-month program, 1 group, 1 time/week for 1-1/2 hours utilizing group activities, outdoor programs, individual counseling, parent participation & group therapy. 14. JoAnn Zales of National Grid announced that they donated $1M back into Care & Share Program, which opened 5/5/14 for those on HEAP with a bill in their own name & a disconnect notice. $250 grant possible. Warren County consumers apply by phone: 718-422-4207 or 718-422-4228

2. Speaker: Allison Reynolds, Council for Prevention, allisonreynolds@councilforprevention.org on Gambling Addiction & new casinos coming to our community
1. Warren Washington County Council for Prevention uses evidence-based programs in schools to prevent substance abuse and foster healthy communities, schools, families and individuals.
2. MADD Power of Parents Program features a 20 minute training for parents on how to talk with their kids about drugs & alcohol, which significantly reduces occurrence of substance abuse later in their life.
3. Peer-to-Peer "Natural Helpers" groups in schools program seeks to identify the informal "helping network" of youth within their school and provide training/support to those students helpers (& teachers) to strengthen the efficacy of that network within the school.
4. Gambling-surprisingly to some, youth are highly susceptible to gambling addiction due to the fact that their pre-frontal cortex is not fully developed until the age of 25, which means their are more apt to take risks and make poor judgements around substances and risk/reward decisions.
1. With the proliferation of Facebook/computer games based on earning "jewels" to build bigger & better "houses", etc., and to earn points toward actual prizes, their developing synapses are being "programmed" for high reward, very quickly with little effort and "high novelty" experiences.
2. Youth & Seniors are more susceptible to gambling addiction.
3. The introduction of casinos into new communities results in increased domestic violence.

1. American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is hosting its "Hike for Hope-Cody's Climb" on Sunday, May 18th, 2014 at Prospect Mountain in Lake George. Registration: 9a. Hike begins: 10a. Contact Laura Marx at 518-791-1544 or lmarx@afsp.org
2. Council for Prevention is hosting a screening of "Here One Day" with Producer/Director Kathy Leichter on Tuesday, May 13th, 2014 at 6:00p at the Crandall Library. This is a film about a woman coping with mental illness, her relationships with her family, and the ripple effects of her suicide on those she loved. 4. Communities NOW, Connecting for Kids is offering Community Training & Training for the Trainer sessions for Washington County. Kim Sopczyk of Family Service Association, serving Warren/Washington/Northern Saratoga Counties, was holding an open house for their new location at 150 Warren Street in Glens Falls on Friday, April 11th from 9a-11a. In 2013, they served 8000 members of our community! Infant needs, food pantry, holiday program, special needs program, emergency dental care, Feet First program, vision & hearing screening, & more. Their goal is to provide support to people going through rough times so that their family can continue to function, stay intact, and grow. Check them out at www.fsaglensfalls.org
10. Genny O'Brien introduced herself as the SNAP Outreach Coord with Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY. She helps people complete applications for assistance, takes the applications to DSS, and follows it through the entire process. Email: gennyo@regionalfoodbank.com

12. Traci Ross, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Southern Adks, announced a new pilot program at South High geared towards reducing bullying and lowering suicide rates. Juniors will mentor Freshmen for 2 years, being their Buddy in school, and once the Freshman become a Junior, they will mentor a Freshman. If successful at South High, Q'bury & LG High will adopt the program next.
1. She also announced that their Bowl For Kids' Sake this year raised $56,000 - which make them one of the Top Five earners!

1. Mission: Reduce trauma to child victims of physical & sexual abuse and their non-offending family members by working with a multi-disciplinary team of experts, who specialize in child abuse, from both Warren and Washington Counties.
2. They complete systematic forensic interview right in their welcoming facility on Dix Avenue, which are admissible in court.
3. Their systematic approach has changed the child abuse system by reducing the number of professionals that child victims have to talk to from FIFTEEN down to THREE, streamlining the prosecution process.
4. The Adk Chamber of Commerce's "Leadership Adirondack" Class of 2014 held fundraisers to allow C.A.R.E. to purchase state-of-the-art recording equipment which is easier to use, and which provide high quality sound recording--much more effective for use in court.
5. Senator Betty Little's office awarded them $100,000 as well.
6. WAIT House/C.A.R.E./YMCA are partnering to provide a Healthy Parenting & Mentoring Program for teen parents, who MUST commit to this program for one year.
