- Interagency Announcements:
- This was the final meeting of the season, so we will re-commence meetings on the 2nd Thursday of every month starting with Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 8:30am, still at the Warren County Municipal Center off of Route 9.
- Membership is available to both for-profit and non-profit organizations within the human services community.
- Community Connections Day 2014 raised $750, $175 of which came from the Raffle Basket. Our current balance is $2389 which will go toward next year's Community Connections Day, as well as towards our Have A Heart Scholarship. About 200 people attended due to better tent location and more foot traffic as a result.
- Interagency awarded their Have A Heart Scholarship to High Peaks Hospice & Palliative Care ($100 for Five Questions Form) and $200 to Council for Prevention for their Annual Youth Training Program around preventing alcohol & substance abuse among their peers by becoming peer leaders. - Allison Reynolds of Council for Prevention announced a program will be held at their office (10 LaCross Street, HF) on June 23rd at 11am regarding opiate/heroin addiction, awareness, resources and education around those issues. - Nick George of Queensbury Seniors announced their annual Community Health Fair, sponsored by Senator Betty Little, on September 13th from 10a-2p at Queensbury Senior Center, 742 Bay Road in Qbury. Betty Little & Dan Stec will be in attendance, as will various "information/support vendors". Screenings for hearing, blood pressure & glaucoma will also be available. - Phyllis Morreale of HHHN's Teen Awareness Group announced a new one week health club (FREE) for youth ages 12-15 called "Getting Ready" (flyer will be posted immediately following these Minutes). - Renee Stephenson of AIDS Council of Northeastern NY announced that after 30 years of serving those with chronic diseases, they are undergoing the process of a name change effective end of June. Because of their current name, the public does not know that their organization can assist ANYONE living with ANY CHRONIC DISEASE, not just AIDS. The name change will encourage more people to utilize their resources, though the process of the name change has been a painful one.
- There are several trainings currently available around narcotic/opiate/heroin addiction, including the use of NarCon kits. For information about these trainings, contact Allison Reynolds at Council for Prevention: allisonreynolds@councilforprevention.org
- Sharon King with Catholic Charities Domestic Violence Project spoke about a 2008 law that allows youth under the age of 15 to get an Order of Protection through Family Court with no permission needed from their guardian(s). The purpose is to address the prevalence of dating violence among youth. More info contact sharonking1@yahoo.com
- Jackie Dunn announced the Soroptomist Garage Sale on June 20 & 21 on Chestnut Ridge in Queensbury. Half benefits Catholic Charities Domestic Violence Project, and half benefits Soroptomist Scholarship Program. Good stuff for good causes! Info: majadunn210@gmail.com
- Susan Dornan of NY Connects announced that all are invited to the Long Term Care Council meetings, held quarterly. Purpose is to address gaps and barriers to services by seniors. Info: 1-866-805-3931 or 518-746-2420.
- She also announced that a Caregiver Support Group will be starting in the Autumn. Contact her for more info.
- Gail Clark with Rehabilitation Initiatives announced a new program by US Social Security called "SSA Ticket to Work" to help those on disability go back to work without losing their benefits. - Jackie Dunn with Neighbors NY announced that there are still open positions available, and she HIGHLY recommends volunteering at House of Grace.
- Audrey Shaw with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Southern Adks announced that their 18th Annual Golf Tournament sponsored by Girard Landscaping raised $25,700, and that Tackett Chiropractic's "Run for the Ages" would be held on Sat June 14th benefitting both BBBS and GF Senior Center.
